Workshops

I was asked if I could run a workshop on oil painting a while back. A lot of aspiring artists are either unsure on how to start painting in oils, or have tried and their work turned out muddy.

The workshops give an introduction into oil painting and also portraiture, painting directly from the model. They are designed to encourage you to enjoy oils and discover which style suits you best.

The day’s workshops covers:

  • Looking at various artist’s techniques and styles and the ways they approach a painting.
  • Understanding tonal values by painting a monochrome sketch in Burnt Umber, often used as an underpainting before applying colour.
  • We’ll then look at colours, paint mixing, skin tones and application and prepare for the afternoon session. I usually give a short demo on various ways to approach a portrait    and applying the paint onto the canvas.
  • Break for light lunch.
  • The afternoon will be painting an oil portrait directly with a model.

Everything is usually included, so you don’t need to purchase expensive materials unless you want to take up the challenge afterwards. These materials include: Easel, Board, Oil paints, Brushes, Palettes, Low odour turps, Paper, Canvas Boards and a model, room hire, unlimited tea/coffee, a light lunch, and my undivided attention.

If interested in attending a future workshop, please enter your details on the Contact page. I’ll e-mail you the proposed workshop date(s) and the cost.
